4th of July Studs and Duds

July 02, 2009

I suppose there is not a whole lot to talk about on the topic of "what to do this weekend in San Diego" since it is the Fourth of July. Many of us jet set out of town this time, winding our way over the Grapevine or through the laborious LA traffic or desert track if we are so inclined, to get away from the stream of tourists who equally clog our freeways. For those of us who enjoy the fresh faces and confused drivers and pedestrians, the Fourth can be a really fun holiday.

We have quite a few choices, really.

One of my favorites is catching the Fireworks at Sea World. Granted, you can catch this show during the summer months most every night, there's always just a little patriotic need to see this brilliant display of light on this particular date.

From the southernmost point of our coastline, to the northern most, you can catch various harbor displays of the fireworks as well. These are generally the best attended events, although the alcohol laws would suggest a much mellower crowd than usual this year.

Also fun are a couple of vistas within Balboa Park where you can see all of the Down Town and Harbor fireworks without any of the sound. For those with the younger children, these vista points are highly recommended.

Just a heads up, this year for whatever reason, mostly budgetary it seems, there are quite a few towns who annually provide fireworks that will not be displaying this year, including Oceanside, Chula Vista, Lake Murray, Valley Center, La Jolla Cove and possibly even the Qualcomm fireworks. Coronado looks like its show will be going on as well as Sea Port village. Hopefully wherever you like to go, you will get a chance to catch a nice light display. Happy 4th of July Savvy folks!
