5 things that really matter and 5 that don't

January 06, 2009

Sometimes parents get trapped into believing their children have to be perfect and that they have to somehow offer every single opportunity to their children to learn at the youngest possible age so they will grow up to be, well brilliant. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of the things that are really important and let go of some of the others so that we can enjoy this short time we have with them until they turn into adults and stop appreciating the beauty of a nice game of peek a boo.

1.  Music and dancing -- At this age, finding a moment to crank up a good rock n roll song and grab the hair brushes for an impromptu rock concert is important. Getting the lyrics or strumming the right chords on the air guitar is not.

2. Eating nutritious foods -- Of course we want our little monsters to eat every possible combination of nutrition and balanced meal possible so they can grow and develop to their highest potential. This doesn't mean we have to take the joy out of eating. Cutting their chicken into hearts or adding blueberry eyes and nose to a pancake won't hurt anything.

3. Playing make believe -- There will be a time and place for reality in our children's lives. Now is the time to embrace their imaginations and embark on a magical journey to munchkin land while we're still invited.

4. Learning how to read -- Snuggling up for the bed time reading is probably a major highlight in any parent's daily routine. It means literacy, an excitement for the written word and the development of a future scholar. At this age, letting reading develop naturally is essential. If we push them too hard, too much, we're more likely to develop distaste for literature when really we are trying to share our love for books.

5. Cuddle time -- Cuddle time is probably the most essential. There is plenty of time for our little creatures to develop independence and to explore the world all around. Now is the time to cherish and take advantage of every single last hug they want to share with us.
