Where Water and Kids Reflect
January 13, 2009
January is typically a month of reflection. People reflect about their body weight, their choices in life, their careers, their parenting skills and even their role in the universe. At the toddler age, our children tend to be a little more interested in a more literal reflection of life -- namely, their own. Below is a list of top spots in San Diego where your little one can contemplate the mystery of life through their own reflections.
1. One of the scariest places in San Diego is to see your reflection in the Great White shark tank at Sea World. I don't know about you, but riding a moving walkway through a giant glass tunnel where sharks surround you on all sides is kinda freaky, but a great way to contemplate the vulnerability of life.
2. The Birch Aquarium Tide pools are great for our little ones to watch their reflections, the marine life within and the constantly shifting landscape based on the pull of the water.
3. Balboa Park is well known for its beautiful expansive landscape and its Monet-inspired Koi pond. This is a great place to stare at yourself as you watch for the leisurely swimming Koi fish to pass.
4. Chollas Lake is another fun place for kids to catch their reflection. You might want to wear rain boots to slosh through the bird droppings that abound from this natural refuse spot, but nonetheless, a walk on the pier or a paddle boat rental should get you closer to the reflecting waters.
5. Legoland also has a newer exhibit called the Sea Life Aquarium, designed for children age 2 and up to teach children about water conservation in an interactive and educational way - a mix of sea life and Legos. In fact, they are offering a free day on Jan. 17 for children with an adult paid admission. Kids can even stick their heads in "pop up"exhibits as if they were swimming with the sea life. Not only can see their reflection, but the fish can too. The coupon can be found at http://www.sealifeus.com/whats-new_2009_01_08
