Multicultural Approach to Memory Games

January 12, 2009

A more modern version of the old memory games of childhood, the You Never Forget a Face Matching Game by EeBoo teaches multiculturalism, country names and traditional dress of different people around the world.

Each card has a character representation of a child from a particular country with the more dominant physical characteristics of people in that country. For example, Hawaii is represented by a dark-haired child wearing a lei on her neck and a flower in her hair, while Canada is represented by a child wearing a snowcap and thick white scarf. Other countries such as Brazil, Myanmar and Mali are also represented.

There are quite a few cards in the box which makes the game even more challenging, especially for the little brainiacs in 3 foot tall bodies that tend to beat us at the game of Memory even on our best day.

I like the engaging aspect of the game during the whole matching process. For example, you can ask questions like, why do you think children from Norway have blonde hair while children from China have dark hair? Or, do you think children in Mexico or Iraq like to play Memory games like we do here in America?

It helps the children relate to difference and understand similarities between our cultures. Not only will they remember where the card and its match is, but they also have an opportunity to remember the names of a  few more countries, characteristics about the inhabitants of those countries and the gratification of getting to spend that precious time with you.
