Easter Bunny and Chocolate Bombs

April 06, 2009

Somehow, unbeknownst to me, the concept of capitalism has sprinkled down to my daughter, who is eagerly awaiting a basket full of prizes from the Easter Bunny this upcoming weekend.

I sat her down to discuss the role of the Easter Bunny and what she could expect but was a tad bit miffed that we had somehow been sucked into the great machine of American holiday capitalism by the preschool peers.

Don't get me wrong, we do love the concept of the holiday - of dressing up special, visiting friends and family, eating exotic foods, celebrating and dancing around, even decorating the house.  But the expectation of an elaborate assortment of toys, candy and goodies was never really part of my personal explanation of the magic of the holiday icons.

I decided to explain to her about the meaning of Spring and the celebration of life and peace that comes with it. We talked about the four Seasons and how Spring follows Winter, which brings us warmer weather, longer days and blooming flowers.

I told her that the Easter Bunny visits houses to welcome Spring into our homes and sometimes leaves a treat or a toy. I told her that he is not like Santa Clause where he gives treats for good behavior but is really here to bring hope and peace to our hearts.

Hopefully when she goes back to school, she will share her new ideas about the purpose of the Easter Bunny and how he wants to give the world a chance to renew itself and end the fighting and struggles of humanity. I don't know about you, but that seems like a much cooler Easter Bunny than the one who just likes to leave chocolate bombs in a basket at the end of your bed.
