Mother's Day Out and About

May 07, 2009

Since the theme of this week for the San Diego blog has been all about the Swine Flu, I felt it remiss to not mention it at least once. Being around other people when scary illnesses are flying around doesn't sound very appealing, but there are quite a few fun things to do this post-Cinco De Mayo weekend, that I hope you will bring your hand sanitizer and some tissue and head to town to catch some of these fun events.

And just a reminder, if you haven't run out to Hallmark to buy your mother a card, today is the day. Be sure to treat yourself to something extra special like a night on the town or a delicious box of chocolates. And if you're good at the guilt card, maybe you can even get out of dishes and laundry this special Mother's Day weekend.

You might consider heading to Del Mar to find out what kind of bargain you can walk away with at the Best Boutique and Bargain Bazaar on Saturday, May 9 from 9-5. You get a free goodie bag, some of the money goes to charity and the rest of the discounted good stuff goes straight to you with a minimal $8 entrance fee. It's at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Bing Crosby Hall. Check out http://www.mylemarket.com/ for more information.

If you are into that old time creole cooking, you might want to take the family to Harbor Island at the Spanish Landing to get in on the Gator by the Bay festival that is happening all weekend long. There's lots of music, some dance lessons, kids' area and lots of food. Kids are free. The website to check for times and music line up is at http://www.gatorbythebay.com/.

If you're a mom who loves her chocolate (and the kids didn't get you any), fear not, as Encinitas has the Chocolate Festival at the Quail Botanical Gardens on May 9 starting at 10 a.m. There are special activities for the kids and the event is free with paid admission into the gardens.

Another great family event to check out in Balboa Park this weekend is the American Indian Culture Day at Park Blvd and President's Way. You will find flute playing drumming, crafts, and traditional dancing. It's a great place to find unique gifts for your mom (or yourself) as well. For more information, check out www.americanindiansource.com.

Ostriches,Kayaks & Sleepovers- Father's Day in San Diego

June 10, 2008

[photo credit: stockx.chng] Now my husband enjoys hanging out in my parent's yard on Father's Day with ribs, beer and the US Open on TV. Out of curiosity, I did a bit of research on what San Diego actually offers on Father's Day-there is some cool stuff. Don't know if it's cool enough to change my husband's plan for his day but cool enough to mention. Father's Day Sleepover at the  Read more...
